The 1st International Conference on Crisis Media Literacy (CML2024) was held on November 21–22, 2024, at the University of Aveiro in Portugal. This event brought together researchers, media professionals, educators, and regulators to address the critical challenges of media literacy in crisis contexts, such as misinformation during wars, natural disasters, and other societal emergencies.
Day 1: Pre-Conference for European Teachers
The pre-conference, dedicated to European educators, emphasized the role of schools in fostering media literacy. It began with a panel discussion featuring experts from Portugal, Spain, and Italy, who shared insights into integrating media literacy into school curricula to prepare students for navigating crisis scenarios.
This was followed by an engaging hands-on workshop centered on Data Defenders, the educational video game from the Yo-Media project. The game equips players with practical skills to identify misinformation, analyze data critically, and strengthen digital resilience, highlighting innovative tools for teaching media literacy in an interactive and impactful way.
Day 2: Crisis Media Literacy Conference
